Heartworm and tick prevention from May

5月からのフィラリア・ダニ予防

It's May and the number of hot days is increasing.

In the season of green leaves, you can go out and take a pleasant walk, but at the same time, there are things that you have to be careful about from this season.

Especially since May, when the weather is getting warmer, we have to be careful about the outbreak of ticks and the prevention of filariasis.

It is easy to forget, but it is very important!

We will introduce you to the measures to protect your precious dog.

About ticks

Ticks become more active when the weather warms up.

If it sticks to your dog's body and bites you, it may affect your health. It can cause anemia, allergies, dermatitis, etc.

Please check the following points when caring for your dog.

  1. Regular brushing and shampooing:
Regular brushing and shampooing are important, as the coat of a dog can easily become a breeding ground for mites. Brushing removes mites hidden in the fur, and even if they are bitten, it is easier to detect them early.

  2. Avoid grassy and damp areas when walking:
Ticks often live in places such as thick grass and riverbeds. Try to keep your dog away from such areas as much as possible during walks. Also, check your dog's body after the walk and check for ticks. It is said that there are more inhabitants in grasslands and forests, which are rich in nature, than in well-maintained parks.

  3. If bitten, don't force it to go to the veterinarian:
Once a tick bites, it sticks very firmly. Therefore, if you try to remove it forcibly, you may damage the dog's skin or leave part of the tick's body on the skin. We recommend that you see a veterinarian as soon as possible to ensure proper treatment.

  4. Use of tick prevention products:
The use of over-the-counter tick prevention products and regular application of repellants are recommended. Please consult your veterinarian if you are unsure of which product to choose.

And in the summer, don't forget to prevent not only ticks but also this prevention...

Filariasis testing and prevention

Since filariasis is transmitted through mosquitoes, regular examinations and use of preventive medicines are important.

Before using prophylactic drugs, it is necessary to check whether you have already had filariasis. (This is because if you have filariasis in your body, the use of prophylactic drugs can cause clogged blood vessels, allergies, cardiac arrest, and other serious symptoms.)

Be sure to check your pet for filariasis at your veterinary hospital.

The best time to check is from May to June, when mosquitoes are most active.

Consult your veterinarian about the best time to test and preventive measures, as each region is slightly different.

  1. Regular filariasis tests:
We recommend that you consult your veterinarian and have your dog undergo an annual heartworm check-up.
  2. Heartworm preventive drug use:
You can protect your dog from heartworm disease by administering a heartworm preventive medicine regularly.

Please consult your veterinarian for specific tests and measures .

Dogs are part of the family.

Let's take measures against ticks and filariasis from now on so that we can spend comfortably this summer.

We sincerely hope that we can support the health of your dog, who is also your important partner.
